MY PYRAMID OR HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

LIFESTYLE by KRISS on 29 february 2016

I am sure you have already seen a pyramid of needs somewhere and if you haven’t I will include the traditional one I found on Wikipedia.
This was created by a psychologist called Abraham Maslow.
Basically, it tells you, step after step, what any human needs in their lives before being able to reach the next level of needs.
so for instance, at the bottom of the pyramid you have the basic necessities, breathing, food, drinking, sleep etc… and at the very top, creativity, morality etc…

Well I disagree with some of the statements of this psychologist and I only realized that recently.
Actually to make things easier, I will tell you the levels of the pyramid right now.

1- Physiological needs : breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostatis, excretion (piss and poop).

2 - Safety : of body, employment, resources, morality, the family, health, property.

3 - Love and belonging : friendship, family, sexual intimacy.

4 - Self esteem : confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others.

5 - Self actualization : morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts.

A few years ago, working in an office and spending lots of my time (wasting would a better word) reading crap loads of stuff on the internet I sometimes came across things I would believe in and this pyramid stopped me from risking anything in my life subconsciously.

Now I beg to differ to that list or the interpretation I used to have of it.
Rather than a pyramid I would imagine this list to be more like a list of words in the air which size change along one’s course of life.
Only the first stage of the pyramid is exact but this is only stating the obvious.
For instance, I used to believe that security of employment and property was key to all the rest in my life but I found out that running my life around securing those 2 things only made me skip on all that’s above in the pyramid : friendship, family, sexual intimacy, creativity, self esteem, confidence…

Abraham Maslow seems to assume that self-esteem and confidence are a result of having secured all of the things below in his pyramid and that in terms in needs it ranges lower than family or sexual intimacy.
I would actually think that family, friendship or even employment, resources and health directly depend on self-esteem and confidence.
This is all pretty much linked together like a web.
Also, spirituality is not included in this pyramid and I believe whatever one’s people beliefs are (and there is no such thing as an atheist), spirituality plays an enormous role in linking all the elements of this pyramid together.

Well all that being said, let’s not bother about shrinks guidance anymore and enjoy life ! Have yourselves a wonderful day !
