AN ELEPHANT SITUATION

AN ELEPHANT SITUATION Remember these huge pachyderms we studied at school when we were kids ? What were they called again ?

Maybe today the word that comes to mind today is “a mammoth”, but what will it be for your grandkids or mine, if mankind survives until then ? Maybe it will be “elephant”.

If we had to paint a realistic picture of elephants nowadays around the world what would it be ?

African elephants :

- best case scenario captive in zoos.
- otherwise persecuted for ivory in the wild.

Asian elephants :

- some free and happy throughout Asia.
- Enslaved so that tourist can find them so cuuute, ride them, get massaged by them etc… anywhere else in Asia.
- Also used as workhorses in terrible conditions.
- Enslaved in circus in and outside of Asia.
- Other in zoos.

Elephants in Pixar and Disney productions :

- happy animals living in big cities and competing in “America’s got talent”…didn’t see that coming did you ?

So what’s my point ? Nothing in particular, you are probably going to enjoy your elephant ride if opportunity arises because you’ll have forgotten about all this and let’s not exaggerate it’s not that bad right !

After all, it’s only been a few decades of continuous warning in all existing medias (elephants amongst others but today I’m talking about elephants).
How much more does the average human brain need to print information ? Are people just bad and ill minded ?

I mean, we explained to our 8 years old daughter why we wouldn’t ride an elephant in Cambodia and I never pushed her away from the screen when there was reporters filming butchered elephants in South Africa.
Has she had nightmares or has she been so much shocked or disgusted that I had to put her into therapy (or any of my other kids for that matter) ? No, everything went fine, she’s a normal human being, you know with a brain and all, an ability to discern right and wrong and all it did was raise her awareness.

Will it impact the way she behaves herself in the future, I really think so, it did for me and I surely wouldn’t dream of owning any piece of ivory crap or a bracelet made of elephant hair or riding one of these majestic animals in any normal situation.

Illustration are elephants in captivity in the safari park of Phu Quoc in Vietnam.
Not the worse I have seen… nothing compared to the taste of freedom.
