THE HORSE RIDE THROUGH RICE FIELDS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

CAMBODIA by KRISS on 29 january 2017

Aside from the little baby girl that burst into tears as I took her photograph, the rest of our horse ride with the Happy Ranch in Siem Reap was a fantastic experience.
We booked a 2 hours ride which was very expensive I think ($46 each) when you compare that to prices of other activities in Cambodia.
But it was my girl’s birthday present, she’d been asking to get back on a horse for 2 years so I was very happy we could do it !

So we got to the ranch early in the morning, maybe around 8am.
We were given horses according to our weight and level of experience and confidence.
While Kate and Rose were confirmed riders I have been on a horse only a few times in my life.
I was given Ha Haong a “ladyboy” horse I was told.

We rode through villages outside of Siem Reap and most of these are slums.
This gets you back to reality and I was amazed to witness so many hellos and smiles from people everywhere while if you look at it we were just a family of wealthy white folks riding horses through some of the poorest slums you can find on this planet.
All along the ride Kate and I looked around and saw immense potential and works to be done to ameliorate life conditions of people in the Cambodian countryside.
I mean, some of the kids we saw were literally playing on a pile of shit.

Passed a few slums you get to the countryside with farms and richer houses, also fewer people and amazing landscapes.
In the distance we could hear the very loud music of a wedding but it was much too far to even galop there.

And at some point my horse simply had enough walking behind Kim’s horse.
I must say he had already been quite nasty to every other horse along the way.
Biting them over a piece of grass of for no reason at all.
So I shouldn’t have been surprised when my Ha Haong suddenly decided to galop ahead of everyone making sure no one would still his first place.
I managed him the best I could and Kate got scared Rose wouldn’t manage her horse so well.
But we both did and got back safe to the ranch.
It was a fantastic experience, both guys that were accompanying us were very kind and patient.
The ride lasted almost an extra hour and they didn’t seem concerned with time which felt very nice.

With more time on my hands I would have gone back to walk or bicycle the same area and properly shoot and talk to people there, but that will be for another trip.
