THE FIRST NIGHT AT ANCHOR

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SAILING by KRISS on 26 july 2018

Cabo de Gata is a famous natural park and a cape of passage for boats where caution must be exercised.
Like all capes they can kick up big seas when everything seems perfectly fine around and because everything was not perfectly fine around we decided to anchor at the bottom of the cape to spend the night.

We knew the forecast and north east winds around 25-30 knots were forecasted so the anchorage at the west of Cabo de Gata seemed perfectly protected and it was.

We had absolutely no swell but had to cope with the wind and it gusted up to 40 knots during the night.
I must be honest and assume we’ve had plenty of luck because I did lots of mistakes when we arrived in the bay.

There were quite a few boats anchored for the day and we first dropped the anchor in 2.5-3m depth which is not enough for our draught (1m80) and we were too close to the rocks.
Add to that that I tied a buoy and a line to the anchor but it got under the boat because of the winds and could have got into the propeller.
Thanks heaven it didn’t.

After recovering from this first freight I decided to move and anchor in 5m depth.
That was a wise decision and if we were a bit more exposed I don’t believe we were that much more protected inside the cove.
Plus in case of a problem (anchor dragging for instance) we would have had more time to react before crashing on the rocks !

I played it safe and gave 35 meters of chain that I doubled with 2 ropes on deck to take the tension of the chain.
We dived on the anchor to check its position.

And then the sun set, everybody went to bed and I kept checking the weather and set myself on the deck in the hammock to watch the night.
It kept gusting until 5am although the wind started to die around 3am and the silver lining of my night (besides that everything was just ok) was the splashes of a little group of dolphins passing our boat, it was just magic !

It was a powerful first experience and I was so relieved and happy everything turned out fine.
Now we have set foot in our adventures for real.
