SARASOTA JUNGLE GARDENS

Yesterday, all the family headed to nearby Sarasota Jungle Gardens.
First of all I have to admit that being in a country such as the US changes one’s perspective of distances and close by.
I would have normally considered an hour drive a long distance but here it isn’t.
Also regarding the subject, I found out that driving on the main roads is less boring and seems shorter than using the Highway !

Ok, enough of that.
The Jungle Gardens in Sarasota are located in a dream like environment (we toured the nearby neighborhood and it is one nice neighborhood !).
The atmosphere of the gardens is very peaceful, they are tiny, much more than I had expected but we surprised ourselves to stay in them for quite a while nonetheless.
Just outside of the shop, entrance doors, are the parrots, all free on their little perch in a beautiful garden.
We were explained that they are fed here and simply don’t fly away even though they could.
They only put them in cages at night.
Then there are a few alligators in a small pond behind a heavily fenced cage and I honestly don’t know what the point of them unless they are bred for further purposes like being sent back to the wild.
The same applies for the reptile vivarium but I’m not a fan of zoos so you can’t blame me here.

Further on the gardens expands into a beautiful opened space where many many christmas decorations have been carefully placed.
It was broad daylight and I couldn’t say if they are great or not.
We were told they were and judging by the amount of lights I can believe that’s true ! A good sized pond is home to enormous fishes, turtles, ducks, white kiwis and flamingoes.
There are a few vending machines (beautiful ones and discrete) that will give you a handful of pellets to feed the birds if you wish.
Flamingoes know it and will stick to you like your shadow.
They really are beautiful elegant and funny creatures these ones !

Ok, I could keep on describing the gardens but I am sure you can find a map on their website and it would spoil you the fun to go there yourself !

I will have to finish this article on the most important aspect of that garden for us yesterday, and once again I am going to talk about the kindness of the people in Florida ! Her name is Kara, she’s one of the keeper at the gardens and she was displaying a funny animal I couldn’t name (Amy took a few nice pictures of it though and you’ll see it on the girls page), halfway between a red iguana and a flat muffin.
We approached her and she kindly offered us to pet the little thing.
Then she got a small alligator out and we hold it.
The kids were enchanted.
Meanwhile, she was still holding a couple of corn snakes around her wrists.

When we were finished with the reptiles we started chatting with her and she invited us to come see the parrots and hold them.
Each of us got to carry one of the beautiful parrots of the garden and then she even took us to see a badger which was fluffy like a nice carpet and smelled good (she was operated) !

Kara, you truly made our day yesterday and we want to thank you for that !

Oh yes, there are animal shows every couple hours or so and we got to see the one with the parrots.
It was very funny.
I have one piece of advice for people looking at owning one of these beautiful birds though : Don’t get a cockatoo !!! There was one old jealous piece of work there (aged 79) and he got jealous at other birds during the show.
You cannot even imagine the volume of the animal ! Scary !!!
