WORST VALENTINES DAY IN SEYCHELLES

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SEYCHELLES by KRISS on 29 february 2016

While we were in Seychelles last year we happened to spend the Valentine’s day on one of the Island’s : la Digue.
This place is like heaven and I share it as a safe place for my mind with Siesta Key in Florida.

But one funny thing happened to us on that day and I have to tell you that story ! We had been advised by a restaurant owner to book a very sought after meal at a secret restaurant located on top of a hill.
They only served dinners and it was advisable to book our table a few days in advance.
Why not we thought ! Let’s treat ourselves to some nice top of the hill restaurant with amazing views and incredible food.

The first restaurant we had been advised by this same person was « Chez Jules » on Anse Banane and this is truly a gem ! So we booked our Valentine’s dinner at this mysterious place in complete trust.
Well, we shouldn’t have !

A taxi driver came to pick us up because the slope to get there is so steep and with no lights at night we could have never made it on our bicycles.
On the way to the top he collected another few couples and that’s when we started feeling in some tourist trap.
Never mind we were going to spend a fabulous evening ! Right before arriving at the restaurant, we saw something amazing and that was a gigantic turtle crossing the road and actually blocking it ! We got out of the car and waited for the enormous creature to get out of the way into the woods.
That was something incredible !

Then we were there and the place looked like a house that definitely needed some serious works.
We climbed the stairs to the terrace and arrived in a cheap restaurant with plastic tables and chairs, a very basic decoration for Valentine’s day that really felt cheap too and essentially a table arrangement that felt like a tourist hotel or a cruise ship diner’s.
Kate and I managed to get a table closest to the edge and had a nice view.
But to be honest it wasn’t that spectacular.
The creepy feeling of the place probably made us feel that way too !

Our next neighbors were only feet away from our table, close enough to need to whisper to get some privacy.
We were greeted with some cocktail and that’s when I realized we wouldn’t get to choose our food because it was the same as in a cheap (or not cheap) holiday club.
Right there and then, Kate and I looked at each other and decided we would leave but we had forgotten one important part of our plan was doomed ! We were stuck, the taxis had left and we were really to far off inland to risk getting back to the village by foot at night time.

Many big Seychelles bats circled in front of us and it was an interesting sight, I might even have shot a few pictures.
And then when we thought things couldn’t get worse they did.
A kind man with a guitar arrived, sat in the middle of the restaurant and started singing the cheesiest songs of his own repertoire for the whole length of the meal.
From « welcome to the Seychelles, the Island of your dreams » in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish to « Feliz Navidad » he played them all.

This was the longest and most boring evening at a restaurant ever.
We kept watching people’s plate to see how much longer we would have to stay and finally, when it was time to go, two couples passed in front of us and got hold of the first taxi.
That was another half hour of this for us before we could escape.

This story came back to my mind because we miserably failed at even going out for Valentine’s day this year, not that we did not wish to but short of a baby sitter.
Anyways, just to advise anyone having a trip to Seychelles and La Digue, don’t be afraid to ask before you go somewhere and have no means to get out on your own ! We weren’t expecting a 5 star restaurant, not at all, just a simple place like « Chez Jules » with some candle light and intimacy.
We got the 300m2 terrace all in one piece with all the tourist distractions we really appreciate to stay away from.

Next time we will attend the public ball that was held at the library, I think we would have had a lot more fun !
