OPENED HOUSES VS FENCED HOUSES

PREVIOUS / NEXT

COSTA RICA by KRISS on 29 november 2015

There are two kind of houses in Costa Rica, the very opened ones, with no doors, no windows, opened on nature and the ones with a big metallic gate, barbwire fence, doors, alarms, hold dogs, most likely guns inside ! This is a very interesting thing to see both type of houses sometimes close to each other or at least within the same area.

Puerto Viejo for instance is a perfect example of that.
In the city center, most houses have gates, they are fenced and barbwire, most hold bars at their doors and windows.
This clearly shows the level of personal safety people who live in these areas feel.

On the other hand when you get out of Puerto Viejo, even long before Cocles, you start seeing houses with a simple wooden gate and a tree fence, sometimes nothing and these houses often have no doors, no windows, just protection from the rain and many of what they have to offer are on display outside of the house (often not much, a hammock, a few old bottles, litter).

Clearly the difference to us is striking.
In Spain, almost all of the houses have bars at lower level windows and doors and they seem well protected.
Maybe this is for insurance purposes, most areas are well crowded and do not really feel unsafe.
Crime does exist of course but the measures taken to prevent them are important.

Here in Costa Rica, it seems a different matter, aside from the town center, it seems personal safety is left to the own appreciation of every individual.
The more paranoid can have houses that shout « I have something worthy breaking in » but then one thief would have to pass through all the traps laid ahead of them, and thieves unfortunately tend to be good at that.
Or the more relaxed have homes that say « maybe there is someone, maybe not, please don’t forget to feed the dogs and the cats on your way out ».
Whatever the reasons, I am not there to study them much further or judge them only to report that in a photographer’s eye, this contrast is simply very interesting.
