MOTION BLUR MONOCHROMES

PHOTOGRAPHY by KRISS on 05 june 2016

Lately I have been working for far too many hours on a single photograph of a model underwater with radioactive cans (fake ones obviously… we care about our models).
This led me through many stages of editing, correcting and not being satisfied with the results.
At some point I thought about going nuts or monochrome which led me to the editing of the following shots.

But this is not the purpose of the topic.
If you want to monochrome your shots in Lightroom, play around with the temperature and color bars to their minimum and maximum values and you’ll get what you want.

Today I want to explain a simple technique that is quite effective to translate motion into a photograph : motion blur.
Very often used for sports photography with cars, bikes etc… this gives a rather neat image of the subject with a blurred background but not in terms of bokeh, in terms of motion.
It looks as if the background is moving.

For the purpose of this post I used my kids (I paid them with ice cream) at the Balcon de Europa in Nerja.
They are not the fastest moving objects I could have chosen but I had them handy and they come cheap lol ! Plus they are a good example of motion blur with some handicap.

These images were shot with the following equipment and settings :

- Nikon D4s.
- Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART.
- ISO 100 / -5 expo / f4 / 1/40s.

The whole purpose of motion blur is to shoot at a lower speed than the length of your lens.
For instance I used a 50mm and shot at 1/40 sec.
Motion blur is easier to achieve with longer lenses (70-200mm for instance) and fast moving objects.
As I said, my kids can move but they are not rockets.

In terms of technique that’s about it ! Lock your subject in AF-C mode, never stop following even after your shot.
Use a smaller shutter speed than your lens.
Set your ISO, aperture and expo correction according to your artistic taste and ambient light.
That’s it !
