FRUITS IN COSTA RICA

PREVIOUS / NEXT

FOOD by KRISS on 26 november 2015

I remember watching a video by Ka Sundance a few months ago, from the raw food family and he was comparing the choice of fruits between Thailand and Costa Rica.
Apparently he wasn’t too happy with Costa Rica on this one because the choice in Thailand seemed to be huge ! We have not been to Thailand yet but we eat lots of fruits and I can tell you more or less what you can easily fin here in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica and also how much it costs.

So without further introduction, here is our list of fruits in Costa Rica Caribbean side :

- Mandarins : 1000 CRC - $2 for a bag of 4.
They are dark green outside and huge.
They are really delicious for their juice not so much for the flesh.

- Limes : 500 CRC - $1 for a bag of 12.
They are simply delicious.

- Oranges : 1000 CRC - $2 for a bag of 4.
They are lighter green and not as good as mandarins.

- Small platanos bananas : 50 CRC - $0,10 each.
They are very tasty and extra sweet.

- Standard bananas : 200 CRC - $0,40 each.
They are standard ripe bananas and are always ripe.
It’s difficult to find a bunch to eat later.
Fortunately you can buy them on a daily basis.

- Platanos bananas : 200 CRC - $0,40 each.
They are the kind of banana you want to cook in dishes.
Much harder than other bananas you need to buy them ripe.
They will cook with other vegetables and, or rice wonderfully.
They are my favorite.

- Coconuts : 400 CRC - $0,80 each.
That is if you buy a bunch.
For a whole review, read our post on coconuts !

- Pineapples : 1000 CRC - $2 each.
Extra sweet, they are very much full of pesticides but they don’t penetrate the skin (so we were told).
You can eat them quite safely.

- Starfruits : 200 CRC - $0,40 each.
Very acid and refreshing.
They tickle on the tongues.
My kids love them.
Kate hates them here.

- Papayas : 400 CRC - $0,80 each.
Nice standard papayas, always buy small ones, big ones are too watery.

- Cocoa fruits : 100 CRC - $0,20 each.
They are supposed to contain some milky kind of jelly flesh in them but we didn’t find them that great.

- Passion fruits : 100 CRC - $0,20 each.
They are the light ones most of the time with yellowish greenish seeds.
They taste good but not much to eat.

- Avocados : 1000 CRC - $2 for a bag of 3.
This is the cheapest we found for small avocados.
They are nice and very fat but you can find them at more than 1000 CRC piece in supermarkets.
Avoid !

- White apples : 200 CRC - $0,40 each.
The outside skin is actually pinkish red but the skin is extra white.
They are acid and not very tasty.
They are closer to pears than they are to apples.

These are more or less the fruits you can easily buy on the street in Puerto Viejo.
One piece of advice : Don’t buy fruits at the supermarkets, but from street vendors.
There is one cheap stall just after the bridge in Cocles and I think he’s the cheapest of the area.
Besides most or all of his fruits are organic and we never were disappointed.
