A CHAPTER IN ALMERIMAR

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SAILING by KRISS on 26 july 2018

16 days on the dry is the time it took us to change 10 thru hulls (if we could have done differently we would have got far fewer), change shaft seal, clean the boat a bit and anti-foul.
It was a fantastic experience, out of time, out of reality but so is all this adventure it seems.
Sometimes like roller coasters, emotions reach high and low points and it seems exacerbated by the boating lifestyle.

Also we met fantastic people over there, a family of french peeps who were doing up their enormous wooden boat.
They helped us out on nearly every aspect of our works and we lend a hand as well as we could.
They make wine tasting on their boat (la-cave-voyageuse.com) and thanks to them we discovered again the pleasure to share a game of cards !

This stop made a big hole in our budget but there was hardly any cutting corners when it comes to boat security and works below the floating line.
This is our home now… A home with no water on the dry where we discovered a going back to ancient ages, lifting bottles of water to get the dishes done.
We even ate out of plastic kitchen ware for a couple of weeks to save the trouble !

Living conditions on a small 42 foot sailboat for 5 people and a dog can get a bit out of hands in a boatyard especially when doing works but a meticulous and rigorous organisation had us tidy every night and it never felt any different than going camping (which we have never done as a family by the way).

Our last days in Almerimar ended with the French winning the football world cup (we couldn’t be bothered) but Amy was into it so we went to a bar to watch the game.
We left Almerimar after strong winds that had kicked up heavy seas and did as well as we could to reach Aguadulce.
It was our first “sailing experience” where we got to only sail for a few hours and we were quite happy with ourselves.
The next chapters are to include anchoring at night which we have never done before (we actually dropped the anchor in broad daylight twice since we’ve got the boat).
There is a bit of anticipation there and you’ll see our first experience was not a walk in the park !
