SPLASH HOUSING ONLY IN SHALLOW WATER

PREVIOUS / NEXT

UNDERWATER by KRISS on 31 march 2016

My friend Jimmy kindly offered me a little boat trip to test my new Aquatech base water housing yesterday and it turned out to be a fantastic afternoon because we spent it with a few dolphins !

But the girls have already posted something about that and I want to review the first impressions with the water housing and the mistakes I probably made.

Ok so my choice was to try the sharp Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART in this water housing, because it’s the widest lens I own that can fit in the housing (I chose not to get the lens port for the 16-35mm because of its prohibitive price).
Normally I have a filter screwed on my lenses and I think I should have removed it because it gives us many filters to take out all the sharpness of any lens :

- lens.
- filter.
-acrylic glass of the housing.
- water.

Then in my precipitation and because my cameras are usually set on AF-C 21 points by default, I didn’t double check ! I was wrong, I needed an AF-S the other day and left this camera on AF-S.
To add to the picture, I mistakenly pushed the focus cross points before closing the housing and realized once in the water that my focus point was at the top right corner and not in the middle.
Last mistake, I wanted to see how sharp or soft the images would be with an aperture of 4.
I hesitated between f8 or even f11 but I chose f4.
This time I had no model to shoot and I just wanted to see how I was handling the whole thing in the water etc…

In one word, I got it all wrong ! And this reflected on the photos which were a great disappointment !

Next time I’m going to try to correct these settings.
Also I discovered that handling the housing with no fins or board to help me in deep water was almost impossible.
It’s good because the use I have for this will be in shallow waters by the shore.

I hope the weather will be kind and allow me to test out this housing soon enough and come up with images I am happy with ! We’ll see about that.
