HAS DIGITAL AGE SPOILED THE FUN FOR US

Let’s face it, with millions, perhaps billions of photographs shot everyday through smartphones, DLSRs, other camera systems and so on, part of them being good, most of them being manipulated in Photoshop or Lightroom or even just Instagram, then published on social medias blogs etc… our eyes are getting used to viewing amazing photographs that basically do not reflect the truth.

This is true of any area of photography, including landscapes and cityscapes and waterscapes and I am wondering if it doesn’t kill part of the fun or the beauty of discovering new places.
First of all, it is so very likely for us to check any place we are going to visit over and over again.
I do it, I google image everything, I hashtag places in Instagram, I read reviews and posts and at the end, does any new place really feel new when I arrive there ? Also, having seen amazingly bright and colourful sunsets which nature will simply not achieve as such because it’s all photo manipulation, do I not get disappointed even slightly when I witness the real thing.

Let’s face it, if I look at 90% of my raw photographs before any post treatment again, and compare them to my library of well retouched, enhanced photographs, how will they compare ? How will I feel about my work, the places or the people I have shot ? As regards to people, I might still be happy and I believe I am capturing a moment even for posed modelling works.
A person will never give me the same image twice and post work is part of the fun I guess.
But how about landscapes.
That’s another story.

Right now, it’s autumn in Nerja and sunsets have kind of improved from what they were during summer but have they really amazed me ? Have I been able to shoot something my eyes have witnessed without retouching it and be happy with it ? Don’t I always feel the need to put in more color, more vibrance, more contrast ? Of course places will always have a different feel in reality than they have in an image but right now I am only talking about pleasing the eyes.
And for that matter, I think digital age has kind of spoiled the fun for our reality…
