A WEEK IN THE BOATYARD

SAILING by KRISS on 02 july 2018

A WEEK IN THE BOATYARD It has been exactly a week since we left Marina del Este and arrived in Almerimar, and 5 days since we got Celedon out of the water to do some repairs in the boatyard.
I won’t go too much into the details of what we’re doing, you can always check our episodes on Youtube where we talk about the works we undertake a bit more.
Let’s say we need to change various pieces that can only be accessed when a boat is out of the water (through hulls, shaft seal) and some basic maintenance.

Life has been very different from what we are used to on the boat.
First, the boat is static and only moves when the wind blows a lot and it’s really not reassuring because it rests on wooden structures and it feels like an earthquake.
Then, we have no more water in the tanks and have disconnected all the pipes.
So we need to use the facility toilets all the time and we have a ladder to get on the boat.
Belle’s routine has changed a lot too, we have to lift her up and down with a halyard and a hammock.
Also she now stays with us all the time and even climbed down the ladder once because we had left her on the boat with the kids.
She didn’t hurt herself much but what a freight we got when we suddenly spotted her walking behind us on the streets of Almerimar !

We try to achieve as much boat works as we can daily but the temperature has been very hot this last week and it sometimes feels like we’re not doing much (we are).

Another equation when doing boat works is money and working around that one is quite an exercise although we must reckon we’ve been lucky and sorted ourselves out well so far.

Also help is the norm between fellow cruisers and people have not only explained to me how to do our repairs but lend me some tools I didn’t have on board (others have looked down on me for not having the “basic” tools one must have on a sailboat).
If I had all the tools I’m likely to need I can sell the boat to buy them !

The kids are adapting, the girls found a beach they’ve been going to, Tom found a fellow gamer on a neighbour boat and even if they ask every day when we go back to the water they’ve been very good.

As I am writing this blog Amy is preparing homemade pizzas, I’m looking forward to a cold beer and wondering what pictures I have on my cameras to illustrate this blog ! On a bigger scale we look forward to cruising to the islands and start a new business, start working again (we’ve been off work for only 2 weeks but we need to make a living) and go on with our lives with fewer uncertainties.
This boat life experience will undoubtedly be something worth telling the grandchildren one day !

Photo is Rose shot by Amy one afternoon near the boatyard.
