LONG EXPOSURE MESSED UP DAY

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PHOTOGRAPHY by KRISS on 10 february 2017

With some practice and whole days of shooting to the bin, I am sure I will get used to double checking my exposure compensation settings.
This is the second time this happened to me during this trip, let me explain.
First, the display after shot feature is not activated on my cameras to save batteries and because I seldom check what I do on the lcd screen.
Maybe it is my first mistake but I’ve always shot like this and I believe before digital photographers didn’t have the luxury to check on lcd screen.

So I wanted to spice things up a bit by long exposing a beach scene in broad day light.
I only carried a screw-on 10 stops filter which is dead and a light joby gorrilla pod.
This is not really the ideal equipment to do that but I was going to try it anyways.
After lowering my ISO as low as it gets, closing my lens to the desired aperture, locking the filter on… well I still was very very bright to do any long exposure, even just a couple of seconds.

And what do you do when you’ve used all your options ? You still have exposure compensation which I can set to -5 on my camera and it usually does the trick.

It did and I got my photograph just fine ! The only problem is that I completely forgot about it afterwards and kept shooting with a -5 exposure compensation set on my camera.
The light meter won’t tell you anything of course, it would be too easy and besides it would kind of defeat the purpose of exposure compensation.
And I spent half the day shooting black photographs which are useless.
I was so upset when I realised the mistake a few hours later and I since thought of options to avoid it in the future.

My first option is relying on my memory, I’ve done it twice now and it’s very likely I will pay extra attention next time.
My second option is to switch back the display after shot feature and it’s probably the safest option.
My third option is never to use exposure compensation for long exposures and combine filters and this is by far the best option !
