BALANCING A FLASH IN VERY LOW LIGHT

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PHOTOGRAPHY by KRISS on 10 july 2016

With such a capable camera as the Nikon D4s under low light and the magnificent Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART, I actually wonder why I even bothered using a flash.
After my series of long exposure with Sofia and her mum, I felt I would let them a bit disappointed if they were to go back home dressed up like this for only one shot.
So I decided to give a couple of simpler mother-daughter shots and since my assisting son already had the powerful Godox Witstro 360AD with a beauty dish on a perch (a monopod for that matter), I set about shooting some more with that setting.

The problem you immediately face is to not end up with a completely blown out picture, especially when your subjects are dressed in white.
For that, I just decide the following elements before triggering the lights:

- I decide which aperture and which speed I want to work, this is up to personal taste, lens length etc so I cannot help you there.
- I then decide to try an ISO according to the light meter and lower it a bit as to get a rather underexposed photograph.
- Then I manually try light intensities working my way up, the goal is to fill up the shadowed skin tones and not over balance the background.

At the end, with powerful lights you may always get lots of difference between 2 shots because people move, the light moves and the too contrasty pictures can be just perfect for high contrasty black and whites !

At the end I decided to open my lens a little more, switch off the bare bulb light and shoot in natural light.
The shots speak for themselves !
