DRAMATIC EFFECTS UNDERWATER THANKS TO LIGHTROOM

UNDERWATER by KRISS on 05 may 2016

Ok, first things first, let me tell you the tale of how I met the model on these very photos : Chiara ! Ah did I get your attention, I hope so because you could well learn something from this story.

Chiara stopped by our shop last year for perhaps 10 minutes.
That was the initial place we met her.
And then, although I am usually bad at remembering faces (I must be getting better with age), I 90% sure recognised her running by the beach a few days ago.
I was playing with my girls and I told Amy : “I’m pretty sure this girl is an Italian girl who stopped by our shop last year”.
She was impressed with my remembering a face that well but told me I was surely mistaking.
Five minutes later, the girl was jumping in the water to cool off her running I suppose and stayed for a good 10 minutes in a water I had only cowardly handled with a wetsuit.
I admired the performance since she was moving about a lot, looping and such… And then it struck me : If she was that comfortable in cold water, she was our ideal model for some underwater before the weather gets better and crowds pack at the door of the shop to get theirs lol !

I decided to wait for her to get out of the water and ask her if she was interested.
Now in the sea she was quickly joined by a young chap who seems keen to show her his bravery.
Certainly feeling kind of trapped and not coming across like that kind of girl, she quickly got out of the water covering her chest with both arms, picked up her running bag and towel in one gesture and walked towards the showers.

I felt it was perhaps the worst possible moment to go and talk to her but I still did it anyways and I don’t regret it.
I introduced myself and simply explained what I was looking for, something like “I go the beach everyday and couldn’t help noticing you stayed quite a long time in the cold water and seemed comfortable enough.
This is rare ! I am looking for such people to do artistic underwater photography and I have lots of difficulties finding anyone right now, if you’re interested, stop by our shop and we can discuss that further.”

Ok it certainly helped that my 2 daughters were with me, that I mentioned my wife a few times in the conversation and that we have a shop in Nerja where we can be found.
But I really believe I could have managed without any of it.
It’s all about confidence and inspiring trust.
So anyways, all that to say I was really happy to approach someone like that out of the blue because I seldom do that here.

Ok now back to technicalities.
These photos were taken with a Nikon D800E and a Nikon 16-35mm f4 in an Aquatech housing with an 8” dome port.
I post treated them in Lightroom to get the desired effects in terms of colour rendition and light.
I then edited them in Photoshop to get rid of a line of tiles I didn’t like (and could easily remove) and I intensified the sun rays for dramatic effect.
Ok I have to go I can’t go any deeper into the explanation but I might try to post that on fstoppers (as if they were going to ever reply lol).
