WAVES FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

PREVIOUS / NEXT

UNDERWATER by KRISS on 01 april 2016

Pipeline ? Not quite, Playa del Salon Nerja, Spain.
Still the sea battered me strong yesterday and I felt tumbled as if I had been in a washing machine.

When I arrived at the beach, I could hear the waves rolling from the distance and they sounded strong but I didn’t realize how strong until I went in the water.
Yes it was freezing cold, that’s the first impression I felt, quickly followed by a wave a little higher than me that gulped me down like a monster and I got stuck to the bottom of the shore for a few seconds.
When I got out, I realized how much I had underestimated the power of the waves even in the Mediterranean, you simply can’t mess with the sea !

Ok so this time I did remove the UV filter from the lens, I set the camera at f8 on AF-C 21 points on an auto ISO in A mode.
That was just fine to trigger with no problem but I experienced how much the whole camera equipment blocked me in the waves at attempting any move not to drown.

I tried to shoot at every possible angle to analyse my results afterwards and these are my conclusions so far :

- You cannot shoot facing the sun, obviously.
But even more obvious with this underwater housing.
- If the acrylic glass part is not entirely clean (which is very likely when shoot in between waves) you get some ugly spots on the final picture.
- Lightroom will definitely not be enough to get any amazing results out of that thing and I’m going to have to play with photoshop to find the right post-production for me.

For now, I’ll wait for the temperature to rise a bit and have people and skin, hair, colors to shoot to adjust my settings.
That might have to wait another couple of weeks if I trust the weather board for our area (fortunately I don’t trust it and maybe the weather is only going to get better).
