UNDERWATER by KRISS on 19 may 2016
Dome, dome, dome and dome.
I think that’s the key to shooting underwater splits.
I won’t do a physics lesson because I can’t but from the information I gathered, a flat surface reflects the light in a different manner than a dome.
As a result if you shoot splits (half inside the water, half outside the water) with a flat port for your camera housing, you end up with a disproportionate half (the one inside the water) which appears bigger.
The only way to avoid that is to use a dome port and the bigger the better.
I tried to avoid the expense for a while, thinking I could sort myself out with an ultra wide angle behind my flat port.
At the end I gave up the idea because it was a bad one ! I would add to that that I shot a few waves and bodyboard sessions with my girls using the dome port and I honestly don’t see much difference with the flat port for outside shots.
So if you have to respect a budget and can only afford one port I would strongly advise to get a large dome port because you’ll be able to do an awful lot more things with it !
