LENNETTE NEWELL STOLEN WORKS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

ECONOMICS by KRISS on 04 february 2016

Lennette Newell is a fine art photographer who realizes stunning animals and people collages amongst other things.
I had came across her works a few years ago on some website and I really loved it.

So what was my surprise last week when I came face to face with a few of a works in a second hand shop in Nerja.
The following story, is one about stealing art and reproducing without authorization and if it sounds silly and trivial to you, just imagine how much time a photographer spends creating such artworks, how difficult it is for them to sell through proper channels and how upsetting and unfair it can be to discover their works have been stolen.

Ok, so we stopped in this second hand shop out of curiosity because it opened not long ago and they seemed to have a few interesting objects.
Kate has always loved second hand shop, rummaging through things to find the unthinkable good bargain.
We once had the house packed full with such unthinkable bargains but I must admit it was done with lots of taste !

Anyways, when I opened the door, my eyes went up and I immediately looked at Lennette Newel’s works because they reminded me of something.
The one of the wall was a man on an elephant and I thought to myself « I’ve seen this somewhere ».
And then left alone in a dark corner of the shop, on the floor was a good sized print of a woman next to a zebra.
The original piece is called « Rayures dans la nature ».
As you can see the woman is painted with a similar pattern as the zebra, one can only admire whoever did this paint job on the girl’s body.
I looked at it and told Kate « I know this stuff, if it’s a limited print it’s definitely worth something ».
We looked at the back, saw an inscription with the artists name and a 7 out of 11 sign.
Eleven seemed an odd number to limit prints but what the heck, artists are weirdos aren’t they ! Kate looked at the frame which was a cheap plexi frame and told me : now way any artists would put their expensive works in that.
But then you never know, the owner can have dropped the original, or someone else…

We couldn’t see the print itself because the back was properly taped and I asked the man who runs the shop, and I asked him about this print.
He replied it was part of a stock of many prints paintings etc… their second hand shop had purchased and they didn’t have a clue what it was worth.
He said « some have prices at the back, some have limited number and artists names but are they real, are they famous, is it worth anything, I don’t know ».
I offered him 10 euros to clear it out of his air and he took it.

Back home, I was happy with my print because I love the piece and besides David Lachapelle’s From Heaven to Hell book and a few small prints of Roberto Dutesco horses of sand Island I have no other photography than ours.
Out of curiosity, I decided to write an email to the artist, Lennette, and used my all time favorite Facebook to do that (at least one intelligent use of the damn thing).
She confirmed it was a rip off and so she had been ripped off too.
I don’t know how many copies of her works are out there.
She does beautiful stuff and her series on women and animals could be a huge seller in places like Allposters for instance.
It’s catchy, it’s tasty, it’s well executed, it conveys meaning, and it’s beautiful ! It has all the ingredients to sell, probably the reason why it was stolen and copied in the first place.

Now this is upsetting for her and also for me but honestly I am happy with my 10 euros fake print, which introduced me to a very nice fellow artist ! Although one question remains for me : the quality of the print is quite good and the size (A3+) leads me to think it was printed from a good sized digital file.
Perhaps that’s where the theft started…
