LOCAL ARTISTS ARE BEAUTIFUL

NERJA by KRISS on 25 february 2016

So I met someone who makes beautiful hand crafts last week and her name is Paloma.
If you walk down Calle Pintada in Nerja, you cannot miss her shop, and actually you shouldn’t ! It’s called Manos and there is a pair of hands on their logo.

They make leather craft and if I went in there looking for leather for straps, I ended up engaging conversation for the owner and her beautiful story ! This is one of the oldest shop in Nerja and has been doing leather goods for almost 4 decades ! Paloma inherited it from her father and has literally grown up around what she does now.
I cannot praise enough what a beautiful and meticulous work she does.

Her place is full of things and if not very big, it is an antique house, she has her opened workshop at the back and you may well see her busy like bee when you stop by.
There are things for everyone, ranging from little prices for small presents, belts, handmade jewelry, boxes, masks, you name it, to more expensive hand designed and carved handbags and bigger pieces.
One amazing piece stands right in the middle when you enter and this is a game of chess entirely made of leather, from board to pieces.

This piece is expensive for my budget (500€ I think) but when I come to think of it, it is really bargain price for the amount of work put into a unique piece of art.
I have always enjoyed playing chess but very rarely played over the last few years but I could picture myself playing with this board !

I have purposefully (and because I only had the 85mm f1.4 mounted on my D4s) only taken photographs of the owner working at her workshop to leave it as a surprise for you to discover the place !

I find these little gems are what make a place such as Nerja worth a visit (and even settle for a while for us), but there ought to be more ! You see, this is what has been happening to many of our European countries and it’s a shame.
With globalization and chain everything (restaurants, supermarkets, clothes, shoes…) small shops in the center of towns closed one after another because they couldn’t compete with the prices of the competing megastructures.
Now, the way I see it is that tourists visit places like Nerja because they still have a soul somehow, hidden between the Chinese shops and big brands.
But the more their money is spent unwisely at bargain, the fewer shops that truly have an identity remain.
And this is a shame.

I truly hope the Virgin Mary that I am sure stands somewhere in this little shop will keep a gentle hand on the family that has been running it for that long and protect them from such disgrace.

This is truly one of a kind that deserves to linger for many more years as it is !
