THE ISLAND OF PORQUEROLLES

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PORQUEROLLES by KRISS on 18 march 2016

Porquerolles is not the Caribbean and neither is Corsica.
But in the Mediterranean this is as close as it gets.
Turquoise waters, clear sands, only the pine trees and the oaks can lead you to concluding that definitely you’re not on a tropical island.

We spent a few months there a while back and at that time we had little interest in documenting our adventures with proper photography, which is a shame but anyways, I still managed to find a few decent shots to illustrate my article.

Located at a few miles from the Cote d’azur coast in France, Porquerolles is part of a group of 3 islands and it’s the bigger and most populated on the three.
They are called the golden islands.
I think there must be about 1000 inhabitants on the island, there is a little school, and a few restaurants, lots of hotels and flats to rent, a couple of over priced minimarkets and everything you need to enjoy holidays such as bike rentals, kayaks etc…

This island used to be one of my favorite, my safe place at a time I really felt trapped in my life.
It is so close from the coast yet feels so remote from everything.
You can always resource yourself on this little piece of paradise, if it has to be your only choice.
One has to be careful of the weather though, we did spend a couple of weeks once in July wearing long sleeves and not being able to bathe because it was too windy and too cold.
This is rare but it can happen !

There are only a few cars on the island and everyone uses bicycles, it’s a little bit like the island of La Digue in Seychelles on that aspect.
It feels very safe and once a week in summer, they play music on the square in front of the church.
All ages ranging from 2 years old to 80 years join in and it’s very relaxing and family oriented atmosphere.

The island is split in 2, you are very likely to discover only one part of it, the north side that faces the coast.
This is closest to the village and all the nice beaches are there.
It’s usually more crowded but if you spend a few weeks on the island, tourists usually come and go by the day and by 4pm, the beaches are emptying.
By 8pm, with still plenty of sunlight you can picnic on the beach like a king and a queen with all that gorgeous island to yourself (or close).

Prices are very high in Porquerolles and you can bring your own food (locals actually buy most of the stuff on the continent).
You see people coming to spend a week, loaded with tons of stuff !

With lots of vineyards and olive trees, century old pine trees, dirt on the roads and it’s old mill, the island of Porquerolles is definitely one of the nicest get away, unbeatable at this distance from the french coast, if that’s where you’re stuck.
