SIGMA 85MM DEFICIENT AF

UNDERWATER by KRISS on 19 april 2016

SIGMA 85MM DEFICIENT AF This afternoon I was looking at the street from my roof terrace.
I know this sounds very fancy but first of all it’s a communal terrace and at the end it’s just a flat space on top of a building ! Anyways, I spotted a surfer in the street walking down with his surfboard under the arm.

This morning when I walked to the beach, there was some surf already, no wind and a heavy weather.
This was good.
I gathered it was still good and I grabbed the lens that made the most sense for me…the 85mm in my Aquatech water housing.
I am still waiting for my dome and extension so right now I can only fit 3 of my lenses :

- Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART : I have tried it a few times and works great.
- Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART : Same.
- Sigma 85mm f1.4 : first time, bad idea !

I thought if there was some surf I would probably stay at bay from the surfers and if I can’t take the 70-200mm I might as well take the longest lens I can.
So I arrived at the beach with a lot more surf than this morning, really a lot more ! I got my housing out the bag, jumped in my wetsuit, argued with Rose about the dangers of strong surf and she argued back that yes she could easily swim in that ! Knee deep I already struggled to keep my balance but she gave a go anyways.
Once everything was settled, I finally bring the eyepiece to my eye, press the focus and…NOTHING ! Bloody hell, I tried shooting and this worked fine.
Back on the shore, I opened the back of case precociously, got the camera out, triggered a few times, everything went smooth.
I tried different settings for my AF and then after 3 or 4 times I finally understood what was going on.
The bloody lens simply wouldn’t focus with the lens port in front of it ! I got it out one last time, set it at f11 on infinite knowing that was useless with that lens but I did it anyways, out of despair ! I jumped in the water and got smashed back on the shore a couple of times.
I then walked to rocks as close as I could get to the surf and shot, knowing I was doing nothing good.
I then rinsed and packed my stuff and my kids and headed back to open the shop.

The bath and the waves lifted my spirits and I arrived high as a kite on pure life.
After rinsing everything once again and discovering my out of focus crappy shots, I deleted both cards on the D800E and thought to myself “that will be for another time”.

I have no clue what I will choose to illustrate this post, that will give me a purpose for this afternoon lol !

Half hour update : My wetsuit drying at the back of the shop will do !
