SMALL PERSONAL VICTORY

SAILING by KRISS on 31 december 2017

SMALL PERSONAL VICTORY This picture (phone snap) probably doesn’t tell you much except that there was some fog at the marina, but yesterday was the day we decided we would get our boat out on our own with a couple of friends for the first time.
The day was perfect, we had 24°C around 3pm when we got to the Marina and after half an hour spent figuring out how to start the engine (Jeanneau did make it very complicated) we were finally ready to get out and sail.

That’s when I spotted one of the densest fog I have ever seen, reaching towards us.
Of course it was out of question to go sailing now but still we wanted to change birth and so it was the right time to do that.

Kate did record most of the operation with a Gopro and I have to tell you the Marina where we are now is one of the tiniest cutest little thing.
The drawback is that manoeuvring anything else than a Dinghy is a huge pain and our 42” Jeanneau Voyage sailboat makes no exception.

So I got the boat out and then I was committed and had no other choice but to succeed.

I went and made a loop where the Marina allows in order to approach our berth with the wheel at starboard and reaching the berth by stern.
It’s then a game of propeller that rotates the boat in its right position with about 2 meters at stern and 2 meters at bow before reaching other boats.

For those who think moving a boat is like a car, think again, a 10 tons floating object does not react like a car, far from it !

I failed the first attempt and got out again to start from the scratch quietly.
Then with lots of efforts and immense pressure I finally managed to get the stern of our boat in between her 2 neighbours and I had the help of people onboard to manually slide our boat through simply because 4 meters width can’t fit in a 2 meters space without some pushing.
So thanks Arnold, Patchi and of course my beautiful wife and my kids for your help and support… And thanks Jorge for having taught me well !
