MAKING FRIENDS

KIDS by KRISS on 20 november 2015

If there are animals you will definitely not miss in Costa Rica, they are stray dogs.
And as a number one rule, we told our children just to leave them be and not interact with them.
Ok, as one could have bet from the beginning, our little one, Rose, was not to follow that rule either.
Years pass and I am starting to wonder if she will ever follow one, to my greatest worry for her safety.

Anyways, we went to the beach yesterday afternoon, we have decided to apply ourselves to go to beach every afternoon before the sun sets around 5pm.
This is something rather depressing for us, I have difficulties coping with less than 14 to 16 hours of light daily.

Right, so on our way to the beach, we got followed by a stray dog, which is usual but that one kept following us very closely and he had the cutest dog expression in its eyes ever.

I think it was a he (Tom noticed, I didn’t).
We arrived at the beach still followed by the dog who started bathing with us.
Of course Rose was elated and started patting the dog, against all our advices and attempts at stopping her.
She started giving it orders which he kind of followed and a love story was born !

For half an hour we were alone on that piece of beach with Rose and her dog playing BFF on the sand.
I took a couple pictures because they were really so cute.

Then suddenly, other folks came walking on the shore, and they had dogs too, perhaps their own or simply stray dogs like ours.
Our stray dog started following them and Rose got upset.
She ordered her dog back and he came once but the call of another dog to play with was too strong and soon both were at the other end of the long Caribbean beach.

From that moment on, a cry tore the skies apart and all we could hear covering the calming sound of the waves was Rose crying her eyes out, calling Buck.
Buck that’s what she had called her dog.
It took me more than half an hour to calm her down, I was so touched and saddened for her, understanding her feeling perfectly that I took some of her sadness with me and even felt inclined crying at some point.

I held her close to me in the waves and reassured her but nothing would work.
She finally came around to her senses on the way back home where we found larges pieces of bamboo cut and she asked if she could make a wooden Buck out of it !

I can’t start to remember the countless occasions my little girl tried to tame, own, play, interact in any possible way with any animal available within her reach.
This post people might the one of a series !
