FIXING A CHRISTMAS EVE

LIFESTYLE by KRISS on 26 december 2015

So we are to spend Christmas in Florida this year ! It could have happened in many places, Spain for instance, Costa Rica or Nicaragua.
But life so happens that we will be spending Christmas in Florida and everyone is very happy about it.

We are going to tell how we worked the whole Christmas thing around in a house that is not ours, in an unknown place and still make the kids feel at home and spark some Xmas spirit !

First of all, Kate is very very much into Christmas and has always been since I met her.
Back then in Edinburgh, Christmas was a cold season and the beautiful ancient city would shine under the many Christmas decorations everywhere.
In shops the radio would play the cheesiest Xmas tunes you could imagine (including all I want for Xmas is you - but I got to know the meaning of that one), there would be a Xmas market, an ice rink and many many more to make you feel like you are in Christmas paradise.

Here in Florida, things are a bit different.
Still this country is an English speaking country and inherited the frantic passion for Christmas that we used to have in Scotland.
Or maybe the other way around but anyways, people are keen on Christmas, you often come across cars proudly driving with reindeer woods out of their windows (fake ones if needed to be precise), people with Christmas beanies at the beach etc… But that’s exactly it ! Houses are decorated and everything feels like Christmas except the weather.
It is very strange (and in a so nice way) to spend Christmas with the average temperature around 75°F.
Still you can listen to lots and lots of Christmas songs on the radio !

Our first mission was to fill the rental house with some Christmas decorations and we managed an artificial tree in Walmart.
We opted for that artificial tree because real trees cost a fortune in Florida and it came along with some integrated lights.
Plus the kids were very keen on a white tree ! We added some decorations from Dollar General and we got our first step into the Christmas spirit.

Later on we got the kids to make a manger out of a Dunkin Donut cardboard box.
And finally we headed to the nearest Publix to buy some Xmas groceries ! With a little budget and simple things we got some nice amazing Alaskan salmon, some toasts, sushis (Tom’s request) pies, shrimps and a beautiful green cake that get your mouth green for the rest of the Christmas evening !

On the 24th we looked for unusual celebrations such as gospel or else and ended up finding some join in singing by the beach in Venice.
Unluckily, we had to stay home waiting for the family to Skype us (which didn’t happen) and we arrived at the beach too late.
Never mind, we spent a wonderful time at the pier and then headed back home to make a little video with the kids while Kate fixed a beautiful Christmas table.

It might not be the usual Christmas the kids are used to (seeing their cousins to start with) and for us all the organizing whom goes where when, what to bring bla bla bla… but it it was nice ! It was a little hassle all fun Christmas Eve and I think everyone enjoyed it very much !
