DUONG DONG PHU QUOC BY NIGHT

PREVIOUS / NEXT

VIETNAM by KRISS on 04 february 2017

Tonight we are going out.
We could have stayed on the beach but we decided to give the city center a go.
Besides the girls are craving for sea food so they want to find to best crab in town I guess !

A 5 minutes drive and roughly $3 takes us to the city center and we start walking the couple of streets that spread where the driver dropped us.
I discovered day time that the city center is a lot bigger but it was night time so we stuck to the well lit area with tourists.

There is indeed some seafood on display in large aquariums or rather small aquariums put together.
Inside fresh but miserable creatures are awaiting their certain death under neons.
I don’t feel very comfortable, haven’t been comfortable with fishing either during this stay.

Besides the many restaurants who all serve the same menu, a few bars, street food, mostly ice cream done on the spot and the french “chouchou”.
A guy called Dominique opened a “chouchou” factory 7 years ago and now employs 17 people of his family.
He is behind his stall and we have a chat with him.
He looks happy and confirms this.
We buy some ginger and vanilla chouchous and even if I am not supposed to eat peanuts too much, I indulge myself and they are delicious.

A street vendor is writing names on rice grains and Kate gets closer to watch him.
He hands her over one of his grain, the one he’s just finished, we look at it and it reads “Amy”.
Well, that must be a sign we have found our first present for our daughter left in Spain (her own will again).

We sit at a restaurant and a waiter comes to take our order.
We order some food and he quickly comes back with drinks.
So far so good.
Then a waitress arrives (she does not speak english) and kind of ask us what we want to order.
We explain the order has been taken by her colleague already but she does not speak english so it gets very confusing.
Something like :

- No, thank you, you friend, a guy, works here, he took order already.
Guy, man, boy works here…

It’s not going to work, she’s calling another waitress and we hope that one speaks english.
No chance there either, she gets a notepad and a pen and asks for our order.
A few minutes later, our waiter arrives and finally clears the situation.

We looked at each other and wondered how the hell they manage about 30 tables with half their customer not speaking Vietnamese.
The food arrive and I am quite happy with my stir fried noodles with vegetables.
The girls crabs arrive and there are no tools to open them.
So they start cracking the shell with their knives in the most disgusting manner.
It was a fun evening but nothing to compare with the buzz of Pub street in Siem Reap.
