OUR PLANS FOR THE WINTER

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SAILING by KRISS on 20 october 2018

OUR PLANS FOR THE WINTER So it all comes down to money I guess… well what can I say, we’re no better than anyone else are we? This winter, we have decided to stay in Cartagena until Christmas and new year festivities because it’s a big city, there activities for the kids, and it’s reasonably priced!

Then, our plan is to slowly make our way down the Canary Islands but we need to address a few things first.

2 of us are still stuck with old red life vests that came with the boat and we need to replace those with proper inflatable ones to we worn at all times.
Then we are still lacking an AIS transponder for night passages, a new VHF and another couple of odd things on the boat.

Finally we need to bear in mind that winter rates are cheap when you stay for extended periods in a marina (typically 1 month) so we need to make at least 3 long stops until we cross Gibraltar and start sailing south.

2 of them seem pretty obvious: Almerimar where our friends from Batolo have moored their sailing wine cellar for the winter and Fuengirola where our friends from Aloa are living aboard.
The latter being the most expensive of the two, we need to make up on another cheaper marinas if we want to spend a month with them.

Also we would have loved to go to the Balearics even in December but right now it does not seem to want to be in our plans.
Every time we have planned to go there, something came up to stop us from doing so… we’ll see !

Hey there, i hear you, we’ve been in the exact same position and we actually still are haha! After spending 1,5 years in the Canaries we are now finally ready to continue. About cheap marinas: Gibraltar (the marina next to the airport runway, but no worries, there are only a handful of flights everyday and it’s quite spectacular to watch it from so close) has cheap winter berthing fees, we only paid 12GBP (our boat is 13,80) and we absolutely loved Gibraltar (monkeys, history, great hikes). Rabat was even cheaper, about 10€ per night (no matter how long the stay, same in Gibraltar by the way) and we absolutely loved Morocco. Rabat is also a good place to stay longer, so much to see and do and less touristy than more famous places in the country. We didn’t love Fuengirola much though but it’s convenient for trips to Granada, Ronda (our favorite) and Sevilla. Feel free to ask if you need more info! Best Rike PS we loved Cartagena, the museo maritimo was sooo wonderful!

Hello Rike ! Thanks for the insight. Actually we would have quite a few questions about the Canaries ! Did you find a nice and cheap marina there? Any advice on the islands in general? Is the weather really that good (eternal spring they say) or is it just commercial bull....? Duly noted for Gibraltar and Rabat. You say that you are finally ready to continue...are you crossing this year ? Cheers and maybe we'll meet some day !
