PELAGIA NOCTICULA

PREVIOUS / NEXT

ANIMALS by KRISS on 30 july 2017

For almost 2 weeks now there has been a few jellyfish of the species Pelagia Nocticula in the area of Nerja and la Herradura.
I couldn’t say any further because I haven’t had the chance to check.
If you ask google they will tell you it’s the worst stinger in the med in terms of number of stings, I can easily believe, this is the jellyfish you’re most likely to encounter.
They also tell you it is a very painful sting that can lingers for weeks and I believe there must be different intensities of stings with this species.

I was stung as a kid on the hand by a nasty pink small jellyfish in the med (most likely a nocticula) and this is a very memorable nasty painful sting.
I actually still have a scar on my hand.

As well, I have been swimming with quite a few of these over the last few years and quite often felt a very mild sting, lots of people have also reported similar stings.

So maybe they can dose what venom they deliver or maybe I’ve just been lucky ! However these creatures are really beautiful and if it wasn’t for my dome port still recovering from its restauration I would have loved to shoot them with something else than a GoPro !
