PETTY THEFT CARTAGENA

PETTY THEFT CARTAGENA So our experience of Cartagena (Spain) could have been really fantastic.
The city center is pretty, plenty of walks for Belle, the club at the marina is fantastic, swimming pool every day in August for the kids (and us as well), the harbour is indeed very well protected, our berth very close to the center… well a bit too close maybe.

In just over a month we got 3 bicycles stolen, on 2 different occasions, our boat was boarded with no invitation once and almost boarded two other times.
Let’s have a look at the recap of these events.

1) One afternoon around 5pm, under scorching sun, Kate, Tom, Belle and myself left the boat all at once to walk Belle.
Amy was alone on the boat but she was taking a nap.
2 teenagers jumped aboard 5 minutes after we left and as they were getting inside the boat, Amy woke up and told them to go away.
They replied “your brother is looking for you, you should go”.
Fortunately she’s a strong girl, stood on her grounds and told them off.

2) One night as I was working late, around 2am maybe, I feel the boat being dragged towards the pontoon and hear noises.
I stuck my head out to witness 2 couples trying to get aboard.
I told them to go away and they looked at me innocently with a smile telling me they simply wanted to take a selfie on the boat.

3) One morning we woke up and the one bicycle we had proudly managed to find second hand was not there any more.
It was sleeping outside the boat on the pontoon, with a lock of course.

4) 2am we hear a loud splash and I immediately get out of the cabin.
There in the water, holding one of our lines, trying with little success to get back on the pontoon is a man that clearly looks up to no good.
He had been stealing on the boat behind us and when he got caught he tried to hide on our boat.
The police got him out of the water 15 minutes later and after threatening me of something in Spanish I didn’t quite understand, he explained to the police that he was looking for some tobacco to roll a cigarette.

5) One afternoon, Rose asks we where the bicycles are and I tell her “well, on the pontoon” “no they’re not”.
And indeed they were not, they had been stolen ! We had managed to find 2 more second hand bicycles at a good price (although the bikes were really crap) and now we had none.

Fortunately, we got one of the bicycles back, as you can see in our latest Youtube episode, and we also changed our berth.
Now we are behind a gate and even if we’re further away from the city, I guess we’ll sleep better !

When we went to the police station to file a complaint we said to the officer : “it’s a shame really because the city seems so quiet besides this.
He looked at us startled and said “there is no real crime here but there is so much small stuff, continuously…”.
Well, good to know for the fellow sailors who might stop in the very well protected harbour of Cartagena in Spain.
Keep an eye on your belongings and if you stop at the RCRC (because there are 2 marinas) separate your boat at night !
