Seagulls are famous for being thieves.
We have been going to the beach and enjoying a picnic in many places in the world and never have we been bothered by seagulls except in Siesta Key ! And I have personally a long history with seagulls !

As a kid, I used to live by the sea at my grands in a multi storey building.
My grandmother used to put a plate of food on the balcony to feed the poor seagulls that were passing by.
What started as a bonding experience with a couple of birds, ended up after a few years by more than a dozen seagulls lining up every morning at sunrise for their daily grandma’s Seagull meal.
That was funny and surely would have made for an interesting reportage but I think the neighbors didn’t see it that way !

The first time I witnessed someone getting food taken off their hands by a seagull was on a boat ride between England and Ireland.
The poor guy was enjoying a Mars bar on the deck of the ship and suddenly the majestic white bird snapped it of his hands with the cheering of the rest of the flock.

But let’s come back to here and now in Florida and our latest experiences with the sea birds.
On our first day on Siesta Key beach we got a few seagulls around when we started eating our sandwiches and of course Rose had to share some of her crisps with them.
They started flying from all over the place fighting between them for every piece of food scattered on the sand.
Once we abandoned our things to go swimming for 5 minutes, a few of them were rummaging through our things and didn’t seem to scared to see me coming back.
They managed to steal a whole sandwich ! This was around midday.

The following time, this got worse and we were coming back at sunset.
As soon as they noticed us unpacking my home made burritos, they started flying around and that time they didn’t land on the beach to ask.
They just kept circling us, giving Kate the opportunity to shoot the following stunning images, and aimed at the burritos.
They snapped Rose’s burrito and Amy’s one quite easily and fought over them.
I then decided to bravely eat mine and had to cover it with both hands and stand up to feel safe enough to eat ! Nonetheless, a few daring seagulls tried to snap it off of my hands and the large number of birds was impressive.
Later on that evening we witnessed a young kid running on the beach with food in his hands, followed by the flock but he was more amused than worried ! As for Kate and Tom’s burritos, they waited we went back to the parking lot to eat them !

Yesterday, finally the kids got their revenge on the seagulls as we stopped by the beautiful Siesta Key beach once again.
That morning, they bought a little playing game of jelly bellies, you the one where you pick a colored jelly bean that can be one of two tastes.
Either a normal one like lemon or chocolate or licorice or a disgusting one like dirty socks, rotten eggs (that one is nasty) or dog food…Anyways, the kids started playing on the beach with their games and of course food means seagulls.
Only this time they had plan !

They all waited for them to find the disgusting candies and gave them away to the seagulls.
Believe it or not, even the seagulls disliked the candies and if they quickly picked them up at first, they let go of them even quicker ! That’s mean I know !
