STREETS IN PUERTO VIEJO

PREVIOUS / NEXT

COSTA RICA by KRISS on 29 november 2015

In Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, the city center stands in between a main street that stretches between the bridge at the entrance of the village and passes by the Old Harbor supermarket, the BCR (Bank of Costa Rica) that counts 2 cashier points, a few shops and ends at the crossroad where the road that stretches to Manzanillo starts.
At the beginning of this road you’ll find a few restaurants on your right and stalls on your right, though we were unsure of what they stand for.
Sometimes locals use them as shelters from the sun and you don’t really know what’s happening there and at night they hold a few street markets.

on each side of this main road run a few streets with parallels to the main road on the right.
This area is very green and holds many hostels, cheap restaurants, local homes but also looks kind of gettho in some places.
The streets are very wide though and packed with tourists and locals during daytime.
At night time only the main road and its parallel running by the sea are really alive.

Yes the other parallel (kind of) to that main road on the left, runs by the harbor, passes the main bus station, a few restaurants and bar and circles back to the crossroads that then gives road to Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo.

Puerto Viejo starts way before that small bridge at another bridge and there are a few houses, shops and bars even before that on the way to Cahuita.
This part is more busy with traffic though and we wouldn’t feel too safe cycling it with the kids.
It’s the area just in front of the Playa Negra beach.

In Puerto Viejo, you will find a few mini markets and one super market, 2 banks, one holds one ATM, the other one 2.
There are a few shops for clothes, doctors, dentists (one has a spooky sign) and pharmacies.
Mostly you will find bars and restaurants though.

Ok that’s pretty much all there is to know about the center of Puerto Viejo, oh and also the sea just by the harbor is full of corals and only pro surfers can dare go there.
Many good surfers injured themselves pretty badly so take advantage of the many other pure sand no corals beaches for your safety !
