PREPARING FOR A WEDDING

PREVIOUS / NEXT

WEDDING by KRISS on 13 september 2015

The key to a smooth wedding photography is to plan ahead and know what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.
Very often though, you will have surprises and things won't follow the plan.

It won't matter if you know how to face these situations.

First of all, pack your things in a manner that everything you need is within your reach when needed without overpacking yourself.

Last year I purchased an overpriced "Money Maker" from the company Holdfast (sorry guys your prices are a rip off - but you're a small company I understand) but the product is genius.
You can hold two cameras at once and this is one useful piece of equipment for a wedding.

Then you cards, have a set to replace your full cards and a way to store used ones without mixing them up with the empty ones.
Wear comfortable but smart clothes, honestly you don't want to be the guy wearing a pair of jeans and a dirty pair of sneakers for a wedding.
Get creative, make an effort !

Same for a woman, avoid a dress (you never know when you're gonna have to kneel down to take a shot and who's gonna be lurking at your tights meanwhile) wear comfortable shoes, leave your backpack in the car if you can.

You will have to fight your way through crowds and a backpack is not a friend in these situations.
Keep water, you're going to dehydrate fast especially shooting in warm climates.
And you'll get few opportunities to be offered to drink.

Most importantly, take your time and be relaxed, it does not matter if you miss an exceptional shot, as long as you get another one.
People won't remember that precisely at 14.12 at the town hall, suddenly Melanie the bride's smile was so amazing as she looked at her very emotional mother, and oh my god, this dumb photographer didn't even get that ! No they won't remember that.

What counts is that you get most of it.

Pay attention to light, you're better off spending all your church time in the same area because the light is good, shooting at wider apertures than trying to cover too many angles (nobody gives a shit by the way) to show diversity.

Then be polite, agreeable, if needed to mention, don't flirt this is highly inappropriate.

While one of us covers the group photos (usually me), Kate shoot guest portraits, they often are some of the most interesting pictures of the wedding.

Preparing for a wedding and enjoying your time while shooting, which is essential because you will keep your creativity only if you are enjoying yourself, is all about being professional, smooth and relaxed.

And not being afraid to take bad photos, everyone does.
