MARINA IN CARTAGENA REVIEW

PREVIOUS / NEXT

SAILING by KRISS on 02 october 2018

Our initial plan was to sail to Mahon in Menorca and winter over there.
Prices were cheaper than our previous marina (not very difficult) but the more we told people about it the more we got the feeling it was a bad idea.
Menorca is under the influence of heavy north winds from the Gulf of Lyon all winter, it’s small and dead during winter, cold… well you get the idea !

And when we left Marina del Este to Menorca anyways, I always had a feeling that we would find some other place along the way that would better suit our needs.

What are those by the way ? We need a cheap berth, a place warmish during winter, an opportunity to work a bit and keep ourselves afloat; a place close to a city center because we are on foot, maybe a school for the kids although this is a topic we haven’t finished weighing our different options.

And when we landed in Cartagena we pretty much found all this and as we have decided to spend winter here, we are going to try to give the best possible review of the marina.

First of all there are 2 marinas, one one the right when you enter the harbour, and one on the left.
The one on the right is further from the city center, closed and gated and seems to have more larger sailboats moored than the other one.
It is considerably more expensive but I guess more secluded and neat looking.
Although the office is in a small prefabricated small cabin.
It also seems to cater to an almost exclusively foreign clientele.

The second one, where we are, seems to have a lot more smaller motorboats moored, is directly inside the city (as you will see on the photos people can walk pass our boat) and seems more Spanish.
It belongs to the racing club (club de regatas) and there is a nice building with a bar and a restaurant and a swimming pool, opened to the members of the club and people staying at the marina.
They also have gated pontoons but this is not where we are.

The staff is very nice, helping and they have even helped me keep tabs on the whereabouts of our little Rose who has a very lively social life and moves from the saloon to a friend’s boat, to the swimming pool etc…(more on that on our post “too much freedom)

The facilities are clean except for the showers which are strangely placed and could really do with a bit of refreshing.
However, prices are very reasonable and I guess I like it better that way rather than brand new showers and higher rates.
They have one large (15kg) washing machine and a similar sized tumble drier but the washing machine has screwed us over twice by not spinning our clothes correctly so there must be something we are not doing right.

The office/bar/restaurant/saloon/swimming pool/club is all adjacent to the quay where big cruising ships and other military vessels sometimes moor.

The area around the marina is very large and a place where people go for a stroll at night.
Some even try to get on your boat to get a picture and I had to tell someone off at 1am this morning… no hard feeling but I will separate our boat even more from the quay tonight (by the way Belle is a useless guardian who barks when she hears a poodle barking a mile away but stays asleep when people loudly try to get onboard the ship, perhaps the heat is frying her brains).

There are supermarkets not so nearby and next week we will be trying the home delivery service of one of them because we drink lots of water and my back is sore.
The city center is a few steps away, there are at least 4 different nice walks we can do with Belle and it is one of the nicest marinas we’ve been.

Please butt in and add some more if I have forgotten something.
Oh yeah, internet connection is free but crap except inside the main building where it’s super fast or unless you order a repeater with an omnidirectional antenna (we’ve ordered a kit and will soon review it).
