REEF JAY BAY III SANDALS REVIEW

PREVIOUS / NEXT

EQUIPMENT by KRISS on 23 october 2016

There are so many things I would like to review but I either can’t be bothered or won’t seem to find the time.
However, I feel like I have to review the fantastic pair of sandals I have been wearing for the last 2 and a half months.
These sandals are the “Reef J-Bay III” and I am going to tell you why I ordered them in the first place.

As soon as the weather allowed in Nerja, I gave up wearing shoes and started a sandal life again, I think that was in April.
I had purchased 2 pairs of Reef Phantoms at a very competitive price (16€/pair) and I threw away last year’s sandals who had survived Costa Rica and Florida to finally give way under my feet on our first night in Englewood and I had then stitched them up for another couple of months.

Anyways, while aesthetically appealing the Reef Phantoms did not do the trick for me.
First of all, they are slippery, the sole is rather flat and I slipped a few times with them, including while carrying expensive camera gear in my hands.
Then one of the pair broke on me while far from our flat and I had to walk back in a very funny way.
So yes I admit I didn’t respect the rules and probably put them through hell (salt water mostly) but still the piece of fabric that stands between your toes is not of great quality.
Last but not least, they stink ! The EVA sole is a nightmare, no matter how good your hygiene is and I gave up after having cleaned them with alcohol, vinegar, essential oils, they just kept on stinking.

So I set myself about finding a new pair of flip flops and this time I gave up finding a cheap pair of flip flops because what they tell you is true : Quality does not come cheap.
I looked for leather sandals and since I was happy with the look of the Reef Phantoms, got myself the Reef Jay Bay III which I am reviewing here.
My first good surprise were the soles ! There were no pictures of them where I ordered and it was a nice surprise to discover real soles with a good grip, I was not going to slip again.

Now my review is simple, they were immediately extremely comfortable, I have put them through hell too (salt water, pushing a scooter daily, climbing on rocks etc…) and they have never failed me so far and they have never smelled at all ! For a good month they kept a very nice brand new look and since I got them in black and we live by the sea I even wore them with white trousers a few times and they looked fab.

Now I have worn them almost daily for close to 3 months and it shows on the leather.
It’s thinner and greyer but nothing too alarming ! I think they will survive another few months and I intend to prove it.
For now, I can only recommend these flip flops if you’ve been looking for sandals to actually walk and do stuff that won’t disappoint you.
They cost me around 60€ on sale and you won’t find them any cheaper I am afraid.
