GODOX WITSTRO 360 AD TEST

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PHOTO GEAR by KRISS on 03 june 2016

What better place than Andalusia in June to test the capacities of the Godox Witstro 360 AD ! At midday in broad sun light with the sun just above our heads, on a boat at sea, I couldn’t have picked harsher light conditions an least favorable conditions for portraiture.

A couple of days ago, I single handedly managed to book 3 models on time to do some underwater photography.
The sea was cold and I knew there would be times on the boat plucking up courage for the next dive.

So I packed my Nikon D4s with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART and by new Godox Witstro AD 360 which I haven’t had time to really test yet.
First things first, I took the 50mm because my friend’s Jimmy boat is not a 50m yacht and I would have struggled with the 85mm.
The 50mm is not my favorite portrait lens but I did Ok I think.
Also as regards to triggering the Witstro AD 360 for High Speed Sync I got the Godox X1 trigger coupled with the tiny usb FTR16 and it works beautifully once you understand how it works.
One thing is very annoying, you have to set the speedlight to HSS mode each time you switch in on and off.
It doesn’t memorise the setting and I guess I will find myself wondering why I just have part of my frame lit many more times.

Ok the following examples were shot at f2.8 for most of them at a very high speed of 1/1600 I think and ISO100.
The power on the Godox was 1/2.
Some of the beautiful swimsuit photos of Sofia (yellow top) were shot behind a modifier (a large white matte screen).
The other ones just using the default Godox head.
I also throw in a few natural light so that you can compare.
I definitely have to find myself a beauty dish for that bare bulb !

I’ll let you judge the capacity of this speedlight on its own, especially on darkening skies on the photos where Fernanda, Chiara and Sofia are altogether in front of the waterfall.

Oh and for those who wonder, the photos under the sea are coming really soon !
