THE BIGGEST SHAME OF NERJA

PREVIOUS / NEXT

NERJA by KRISS on 18 january 2016

Once upon a time, there was an idyllic place by the sea and this place was so pretty that anywhere you would lay your eyes, they would meet amazement.
This is a rather close to accurate description of the beautiful small fishermen’s town of Nerja in the south of Spain.
So what’s wrong would you ask me, and I would then reply this :

The closest beach to the major tourist attractions which are Calle Pintada, the Balcon de Europa, Iglesia San Salvador… well this beach that anyone can see from the famous Balcon is called Playa Calahonda.
It looks so nice with the small fishermen’s boats and tourists sunbathing in summer and the sun rising in the background, gardens with lush green tropical trees and flowers, paved beach stones stairs, a walk, there is everything you can wish for…

Only if it wasn’t for the beach restaurant that is in ruins and stands right there in the middle of the beach.
That restaurant is called Papagayo and there is still an old fashioned parrots design sign that advertises it.
I imagine it once used to be great and must have been one of the best place to be with its pool tables, hammocks and umbrellas by the beach.
Today, the hammocks and umbrellas are still there but the restaurant is in ruins, abandoned, with no doors and no windows, opened to anyone to visit the disgusting place it has become.

I am not into politics and haven’t tried to understand which rivalries or conflicts has put the place on hold like this, but whatever it is, it is simply a shame for such a beautiful town not to do something about it.
As I am writing these words, I have been told that something was supposed to be done before next summer and I hope I’ll be able to post good news about the Playa Calahonda soon ! For now, I let you discover the guts of the beast in black and white.
I didn’t put much effort in trying to realize beautiful photography in there as I just wanted to report what I saw.

I guess what you mean but then something had to be done about this place. I saw the trucks evacuating all the shambles a few weeks ago.

Yes than you for your comment. Google translate helped me understand Dutch ! I hope someday this place will be fixed.
