WE LANDED IN FLORIDA

PREVIOUS / NEXT

TRAVELS by KRISS on 05 december 2015

If you have followed our adventures from the beginning of this blog, you will know we were previously in Costa Rica when we had originally planned to stay for 3 months.
But we finally had to change our plans because life in Costa Rica would have had us bankrupt in no time amongst other issues.

So after a short flight back to Miami we finally landed in Florida.

This time, it took us barely an hour to clear customs and we took possession of our rental car around 9.30pm.
At that time of night, the traffic was still pretty busy in Miami, time for us to go the 75 highway where after a few miles the road was dead quiet.
By the way, you have to take the 836 north north and then 826 west to get to the highway.

From the 75 highway onwards, crossing Florida from east to west until Naples, there is absolutely nothing and the road is dead quiet at night.
You won’t find any place to eat or fill your gas tank on the way.
The road is flat and straight and it is very hypnotizing and difficult to drive if tired.
We had to stop in Naples to sleep for half an hour to get enough energy to finish the journey.
Another couple of hours and we arrived safe in Sarasota with the help of people working for the local newspaper and no GPS.
It was 3 am and we were knackered.
Houses all look pretty much the same here especially at night and it was a bit tricky to find ours though.
We went to bed noticing that the temperature was still high (74°F) and very nice !

Next morning we headed to the very close Manasota beach and it felt big and wide as most things do in the very flat state of Florida.
There are no huge crowds at this time of year, only a few families and mostly snow birds and retired people.
You can get a whole big chunk of beach to yourself and breathe.
The landscape is very repetitive on this very beach but I believe there are places with colorful beach houses and piers nearby.
We will investigate that soon.
Kids were happy to hunt shark teeth in the sand.
There are lots of them.

After a few stops to shop for groceries (a post will come about that) we went back to the beach for sunset and the atmosphere is very calm, soothing.
Crowds are the same, couples enjoying a glass of wine in their beach chairs, families daring a swim under the last rays of sun (shark attacks are more likely to happen at dusk and dawn remember ?), seashells maniacs still filtering sand with their filter tool and people just happy to be there.

I very much doubt this is the best sunset Florida has to give us but for a first one I was quite happy about it !
