THE WEDDING GUESTS

PREVIOUS / NEXT

WEDDING by KRISS on 13 september 2015

I used to go about shooting group photos the way people wanted me to, all in a raw, straight lines, school class type thing.
This is boring and long.

Unfortunately many people are old minded or traditional and want their group photos to stay that way.
Group photos are always a nightmare, for the photographer and the guests.

Here are a few tricks to make things go smoother:

First of all, as this part of the wedding may often happen during reception, get yourself a glass of anything you like to set things on the right foot !

Then work with a tripod and a couple of lights on stands.
Ideally one on the right one on the left with a rather wide angle of light amplitude and soft boxes.
If you can use lights that can be adjusted from the trigger this is wonderful, if not don't worry, lightroom is here to help you out afterwards.

Get a wide angle zoom like the Nikkor 16-35mm f4 or their equivalent for other brands or mounts.
Since it is unlikely you will shoot a group under f4 this is plenty enough to get the job properly done.

Then relax and be firm.
Already drunk invitees will spoil your fun by acting out and never shut it while your shoot.
Their bad you think, they will be the ones looking like monkeys on the family album.
Not at all, you are the pro and will be held responsible.

Insist for people to look at you, you will always have a group of family photographers gathering around you to take THEIR own family photo.
And of course they will distract your audience if you're lucky enough they don't place themselves in your field.

The most effective way to do family photo is to find a spot a short distance from the wedding festivities.
This way, people will not get tempted to stay too long interrupting your work because they will be busy eating and drinking.
For the same reason, don't get too close either, or your shooting will be the main distraction.

Finally, whenever it's possible, just place a wide angle in the middle of the place, whatever the setting as long as it is good with no soda cans in it and let people set themselves up as they wish.

Shoot from upwards so that you get a bird eye view (40°) of your crowd.
For larger groups this will be you best chance of not missing a head.

There are many better ways to make amazing group photos but I'm speaking in this article about the classic 30 photos or more, less than an hour thing that is asked of you more often.
