THE WIZARD SPECIAL EFFECT PHOTOGRAPHY

Today I am going to explain to you how to realize a simple fun portrait of your kids, or yourself ! in a Harry Potter, wizard style with a wand jolting sparkles of lights everywhere.
Cool eh !

With only a camera and a flashlight, no photoshop needed at all, even cooler.

So basically what we do here is tricking our camera to take a long exposure with a flash.
What am I talking about ?

In photography, the exposure time is the time your shutter remains opened to capture light and create a photography.
When you open it for a long period of time, for example a few seconds, the photo thus created will trace moving lights rendering a very beautiful effect.
But I am sure you have already seen many pictures of busy cities or roads at night and you know what I am talking about.

So the consequence of shooting a long exposure is that you need very little light otherwise you end up with a over exposed completely white photo.
Also long exposure will make moving things like humans, blurry and even if you stay perfectly still, you are never going to be as still as a mountain or a monument so don’t even try, it just won’t work !

There is a way around it though and it is flash photography.
A flash light will produce a burst of light in a fraction of seconds and this will enable the camera to capture the portrait.
Then when the light stops, the long exposure will only keep recording all the available light and this is how we will create the lights jerking off the wands.

So you need to set up things this way :

- A close to pitch black room.
- A light you can switch on and off just to make your focus point.
- A little portable led light that creates just a thin ray of light.
- A magical wand.
- An assistant

So the first thing you need to do is to make focus on your subject and then either lock it (I won’t explain this here) or put your camera on manual focus once you have the right focus and stop touching anything.
Then switch the light off and shoot with a flashlight mounted on the camera or a couple on the sides, whatever suits you.
Then you need your assistant to be as quick as possible and create a beautiful shape of light with the tiny led light from the wand.

Last but not least you need patience because this is not going to work the first time.
Try again and again until you are happy with your result.
You can easily make up for the blacks in your photos and enhance everything in lightroom.
I personally find this trick funny and cool to do, much more constructive than spending time on photoshop faking Harry Potter’s wand !

Have fun and don’t hesitate to ask if you want some advice.
