DIRECTING MODELS ON A SHOOT

PREVIOUS / NEXT

PHOTOGRAPHY by KRISS on 02 february 2016

Realizing any successful work with a model requires a photographer to properly direct his/her model in front of camera.
This is even more the case when you work with several models that might or might not go along together ! Unless you have the means and finances to shoot with professional models who work fast, know which poses serves them best etc… you are likely to meet models who have seldom shoot and they will need directions to help them help you get the best shots out of your session.

We personally never paid a model to shoot with us because at a simple local level, not sponsored by a famous brand, only for the realization of fine artworks, exchanging our services with theirs has always been a good way to get everyone happy.
In that aspect, many of the models we have worked with have become friends along the road and some friends have become models.

Now many of our first shooters had barely even posed in front of a camera and some of them were in for shoots including nudity (like milk dresses).
You can imagine that they had some apprehension in most cases and that the guideline « be natural » wouldn’t suffice at making them at ease.
I think working with a model or a bunch of them is not that complicated as long as you follow simple rules and behave like a normal person.

First of all, we would always discuss the shoot prior to the day, in the big lines and even in some details.
On the day, we would welcome our models with a smile and a cup of coffee or a glass of water they would 99% of the time decline.
The studio or place of shooting would have been prepared before the models arrival, at least for the major part of it, allowing some trivial chat with them while they got their hair and makeup done (not so much chat for the make up part).

I always tried to put some music because I like working in music, although the favorite answer to « what do you want to listen to ? » is always « I listen to anything ».
Not too loud, just to create a relaxed yet professional atmosphere.

I think they are actually the keywords to setting things on the right foot with any model or group of models.
Be relaxed and professional, create a relaxed yet professional atmosphere.
This will help your models feel confident before the shoot.

In front of the camera, we would tell exactly our models what we were expecting from them and why.
They always knew exactly the purpose of the shoot, the idea behind the realization of the photo or the set of photos, we always considered models as the major part of any creations and included them as such.
When working tethered (linked in direct to a laptop or any computer), we would let models see the first shots to correct what they had to or feel that everything was alright.
This is an option that can be counter productive with models too full of themselves.

We would always respect our models privacy by turning around or minding our own business while they changed poses, especially on lingerie or bare shots.
At no time would we ever touch models even to replace a hair, without asking them and getting their consent.
A simple « may I replace your hair » or « may I move your hand slightly » is a necessity.
Doing otherwise may be perceived at best as an agression and a trespassing of personal space and your model will not respond well to that.

Also, be aware of what you are asking your models.
If you are asking them to be cold because they have stripped down a few layers and you are outside in a cold place, do them the favor to be in tee shirt yourself.
That way, not only will your models respect you on a human level, but also it will prevent you from asking more of them than you would ask of yourself.

Your purpose is to get the best pictures you can get out of your session, and helping your model achieve that is the key to your own success.
