THE MANY JOBS OF A PHOTOGRAPHER

THE MANY JOBS OF A PHOTOGRAPHER When I finally get my hands on a camera these days I feel blessed because it actually means I will do something else than the 90% time consuming other tasks that my job as a photographer requires.
Yes, in the past, before digital cameras, photographers may have had to share their time between shooting and developing prints, communicating and advertising a bit but it surely didn’t take them as much time as it takes to a digital photographer nowadays.
Of course, by then you could rest on your yellow pages advert and most photographers had a shop.

But we live in a different era, a different world, things have changed, people’s habits have changed and this makes things a tiny bit more complicated for photographers.
Now we need to be multi tasking and as best as we can.
And I am going to explain you why !

1) Create exceptional pictures.

With everyone owning more and more capable phones and cameras, the usefulness of a professional photographer is discussed, even in magazines and webzines.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that a photographer’s job is not to press a button but to make an image, an idea come true.
And this requires a lot of knowledge, experience, tryouts and failures… and the appropriate equipment if you want stunning results.
But this is exactly that : you need to create exceptional pictures for your audience to be reminded that your profession has its worth and that no gear will ever replace the fact that a photo happens on both ends of a camera.

2) Self promote.

Self promotion can go through many things, one of them being internet but it definitely deserves a whole chunk of text and explanation by itself so that will be our point 3.
Aside from the web, a photographer has many opportunities to self promote and there are no miracle recipes or guidelines because everything depends on what you do, what your speciality is and where you are.
Self promoting in a small rural area will be completely different than executing the same task in a metropolitan city such as Miami or New York.
As regards to us, we have chosen to make things a bit more difficult by being nomads and requiring promotion in various places, around the world, straight away.
We rely on internet a lot but not exclusively.
Wherever you are, there may be fairs, events, contests you can participate to or organize to get your works seen and appeal to your clientele.
Walk around with your camera, think outside the box and maybe ideas will arise.
I know this is a difficult part of self promotion because one gets often turned down but getting out in the real world and offer your services always pays one way or another.

3) Internet

This is a rather vast area, the internet, widening a bit more years after years.
The more glaciers melt, the more it expands, probably no direct link to consequence there but it is the case.
There are many ways to get visibility, perhaps even fame and glory (jajaja) on the internet.
Some photographers will choose social medias such as facebook, instagram, tweeter,(but also 500px, 1x, deviantart, flickr) as their sole means of communication.
This seems to be a viable option for some, although it may be a little light to solely rely upon social medias to communicate on your activities and for one main reason.
Unless you are very famous or lucky enough to go viral on something, your works may speak for themselves (it’s the purpose of photography isn’t it ?) but it doesn’t for your best friend : google bot.
And this robot, or this army of crawlers, will go through all that belong to you and read what it can find.
Yes I have said read not look.
These dumb robots are insensitive to arts and will only be fed words, many words, which is why writing a blog such as this one might not be a bad idea for a photographer.

But it is a job in itself, and actually most of the tasks I have described above are full time jobs in themselves.
And I might have forgotten a few (youtube, google plus etc…).
Working as a photographer nowadays is a hardship that can be very rewarding and also very unforgiving.
Fortunately, like everyone else cats out there, we have seven lives don’t we ?
