WE LANDED IN ALMOST PARADISE

VIETNAM by KRISS on 04 february 2017

WE LANDED IN ALMOST PARADISE We must be getting close now the plane is starting to descent and I can spot a beautiful island under the clouds.
It is not Phu Quoc though, because we fly another 10 minutes before spotting it.

I have to be honest and the unfortunate first thing that caught my attention are the multi storeys buildings that made the island suddenly a lot less appealing.

I learned later that lots of investors are trying to turn this island into the new Phuket but besides it not being such a great idea, people who holiday on islands are usually not big fans of multi storey buildings.
There is already plenty of that in Punta Cana and Varadero not to make the same mistake there.
What people want are bungalows, jungle, Bora Bora, you feel me ?

Now the plane was approaching the airport and we could see as well lots of green, the rainforest and the island really seems to have two sides.

Clearing customs wasn’t even an issue because we had already cleared them in Ho Chi Minh City so we walked out of the airport as if we’d been home ! A taxi was waiting for us and suddenly, this felt so different from Cambodia and tuk tuks.
Also, the fact that Vietnam has a roman alphabet kind of confuses me a lot !

The taxi driver didn’t speak 10 words of english and so conversation was limited to that.
Approaching Duong Dong the biggest city of the island, the feeling of a transforming island and perhaps not for the best intensifies, roads in very poor state run along brand new 3 ways, modern ugly constructions face older fishermen huts and other more asian styled architecture.
On the whole, the place does not feel very Asian at all so don’t be surprised.

We arrive at our bungalow hotel and the decor is fantastic, lush jungle all around us, here streets are narrower and there are lots of fruit vendors and massage parlours and I feel like I’m still in Asia after all.
I ask the receptionist if Malaria is a concern on Phu Quoc so as to know if I need to use DEET straight away or not.
She smiles at me and replies “yes-yes” and I know she hasn’t got a clue what I am talking about.
It doesn’t matter I rephrase my question and understand that if it was a concern they would probably know the word “Malaria”.

Once our bags in the room, we change a few dollars to Vietnamese dongs and we’re off to the beach to have a drink.
It’s a short walk and the intense smell of the rubbish in one place is not what disturbs me most.
No, what disturbs me most is the 4 or 5 storey that stands in the way for apparently no reason.
It’s an hotel of course and probably and expensive one besides that.
This is utter nonsense I am definitely puzzled by this island.
The beach front is now in front of us and it’s sunset time.
We’re on the west coast of the island so we can enjoy it sinking in the sea.
We take a walk, the sand is warm and so is the water.
It feels nice.

I am a bit disappointed by the beach itself because the sand is very yellow, the sea has a 2-5 meters visibility perhaps and it’s not the snorkeler’s paradise I had in mind.
It doesn’t matter, the island is big and there are certainly lots of other beaches that can allow me to shoot mermaids and stuff !

We stop by a bar on the beach, toes in the sand, it’s packed with tourists but not Spain packed, gentle packed… There are lots of Russians, I will soon learn they have direct flights to the Island and have had for many many years.
Prices are tad bit more expensive than Cambodia but nothing to worry about, I get a couple of passion fruits from an old woman carrying an awful lot of weight across her shoulders and these are the best passion fruits I have ever tasted.
My spirits are high I am happy, relaxed in that place, there are coconut trees along the beach, locals, tourists and although it is not “perfect” or not the “perfect cliche” it does feel nice.
We have landed in almost paradise.
