MONTESSORI SCHOOLING

PREVIOUS / NEXT

KIDS by KRISS on 26 january 2016

MONTESSORI SCHOOLING I was brought up following Maria Montessori’s method, donkey years ago in the 80s when Montessori Schools were scarce and assimilated more or less with some kind of weird dangerous cult.
Back then, Hollywood celebrities hadn’t heard of the method, it wasn’t trendy and people would have paid to get rid of such a plague and not to put their kids in there.

This actually applies to most of what my Mum did for me and I have to thank her immensely for being such a visionary.
I used to eat organic food, was a vegetarian, learned non violence and practiced relaxation and yoga.
We were complete freaks ! I wasn’t ill when other kids around me were, even in winter when I wore half as many layers as others, teachers had me pass in the following grade and then asked me to pass in the next one because I was too much in advance.
There definitely was something wrong with me and the way my Mum did things wasn’t there ? I am being overly sarcastic because people might not believe it now because all that has become so trendy but there was a time when being a vegetarian, practicing yoga, healing with natural medicines and not being down with the flu every winter was looked upon as abnormal, disquieting and probably worth a call at social services.

Anyways, recently I received an email from a woman we met in Siesta Key for the Sunday drum circle.
With her family she has been touring the world for the last few years and wondered if Nerja was worth a check.
She wrote to me to explain that they have changed their plans and would be spending a year in Costa Rica, putting the kids in a Montessori school.
That got me started on the topic and I had to write this post.

Ok, so now no more sarcasm and back to the main subject which is what Maria Montessori method is really worth.
From what I remember it was very pedagogic, I would learn tons and tons of new things without having the impression to be doing any forced teaching.
Every lesson was presented as a game and the reward was to succeed.
There was no competition, no grades to refer to.
Only success or try again.
This method worked wonders for me but the society back then wasn’t ready for it and I was miserable every time I went back to school.
I kept having excellent grades until the age of 10 when I lost interest in school, started questioning the teachers methods, disagreed and tried to discuss with the authority.
You were not allowed to do that and I learned the harsh way.
I felt so much disconnected from the high school years that I kept on disconnecting myself just to prove my point and oppose to a system and an authority I wasn’t used to and profoundly disagreed with.

On a short scale the Montessori method was a wonderful way to learn but it failed on a bigger scale because I messed up all the rest of my studies.
Now I cannot blame Maria Montessori for that but I would advise anyone thinking about bringing up their kids in such a unique and exceptional environment to think about the future.
Will they be able to maintain such a wonderful teaching environment longer than primary school ? If so, go ahead ! If not, just consider that in some other ways, your kids should learn that they will be confronted to less effective and far more frustrating methods at some point and they will have to cope with that with more difficulty than others because they will not have been standardized properly.

Finally, on even a much bigger scale I think it didn’t fail me as a human being, but then I cannot owe it to Montessori schooling alone but it was part of it.
