SIGMA 35MM ART VS SIGMA 50MM ART

PREVIOUS / NEXT

We first purchased the Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART a couple of years ago.
I already owned a 24mm f1.8 at that time and I had been looking at that 35mm for a long time.
I was not fully happy with the 24mm which I often found too distorted and weak in the corners.
I was a bit worried to go Sigma again for that lens but I couldn’t afford its Nikkor pair and reviews on the lens were already very good straight from the beginning.

I can tell you I never regretted that purchase ! It is one the lens with which I produced most of the series « comical scenes ».
I love it ! It is always sharp, always perfect, and whenever I needed to work with more people than expected or closer space, it was never too long, nor too short, just perfect !

Then about a year ago, I was offered the opportunity to buy an extra lens and hearing praises about the Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART I decided to go for it ! I never was happy with the two 50mm lenses I had previously owned, a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 and a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 (I would actually think the f1.8 is better than the f1.4).
Did this Sigma changed me ?

Yes and no, having got used to working with other lenses, mostly the 35mm and the 85mm for months, this 50mm seemed a bit awkward and even if I was over the moon with the sharpness, color rendition and light speed autofocus of this prime, I never quite knew what to do with it.

Now I have decided to give it another go even if a friend of mine is offering me a bargain price for it which would greatly help me in acquiring a proper water housing for my D4s.

As a result, my analysis of both lenses is that I feel the 50mm is a bit superior in terms of sharpness and bokeh but at the end of the day it all comes down to your needs and I think a 35mm allows more freedom than a 50mm.
But like I said, I’m going to give it another go and perhaps change my mind !
