WHY WE BUY CRAP

PREVIOUS / NEXT

WHY WE BUY CRAP I apologise to my little Rose for insulting her beautiful owl I chose to illustrate this post.
This owl she got from Santa in Florida last year and this photo was taken on Christmas day at Siesta Key.
She’s very attached to it and you have to admit it’s very cute.

Yet one can’t ignore it’s yet another piece of Chinese crap ! I have nothing against China or products coming from the empire for that matter but as the world pressurises China (and other countries) in manufacturing cheaper and cheaper products for the western world, we end up at some point loaded with loads of Chinese crap ! I have to point out that China also make quality products, I can name Yongnuo products for photography for instance or Godox.
They are cheaper than European or American brands (who surely get most of the job done in China) but the quality is there.

Right now I am talking about very affordable consumerist addict stuff, souvenir shops items, toy stores and discount stores items.
Wherever I go, the world seems to be over abundant in cheap manufactured goods and Nerja right now is not to disappoint !

But why do we buy this crap ?

There are a few culprits and I would blame our kids as the first ones (easy victims and wont complain).

- We often end up buying cheap stuff because our kids fell in love with it and it is affordable.
So we treat them to the desired object not realising that we are perhaps feeding a more pernicious junkie habit of some kind there.

- I could then blame poor taste but that would be very pretentious even if true and given the choice, most people would go for the quality stuff !

- Which leads us the the 3rd and final option, which is pure irony : the lack of choice.
Yes we actually end up buying most of the crap we buy because we are short of options.
Either because we cannot afford more quality or because it simply isn’t available anymore.

But in some cases, can we really justify this behaviour ? At the end of the day, I think it is a pity most people end up with souvenirs on their shelves from all around the world while they could label them all to a few gigantic manufacturing places in China ! Perhaps a little time thinking what one’s heritage will be and what will remain of their travels could help people spend a little more or buy a little less but actually bring back something significant.
Or else, I should open a new kind of web store where you could order directly from the manufacturer in China, whichever crap souvenir you intend to buy, free delivery, saves travel costs when you have limited weight on your carry on !

I can picture it in my head :

- “Choose a destination”.
- “Enter your budget”.
- For “Rome” we found 147 items that may interest you.

And then ranging from the gladiator keychain to the plastic Pise tower (who cares if it’s not in Rome) you would choose and actually save time on your holidays (and perhaps enjoy a little more the free buffet meal…but that will be another post) !

As for me I am a bad consumerist, I only shoot photographs of the places I visit most of the time.
But if I buy something to remember a place by, it certainly isn’t some Chinese manufactured crap, even in China !!!
