SHOULD YOUR COUSIN BE YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

SHOULD YOUR COUSIN BE YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER Even Vogue magazine wrote it earlier this year.
Why don’t you cut down the cost of your wedding by getting rid of the unnecessary expenses starting with the wedding photographer ? After all, doesn’t everyone at you wedding owns an Iphone or some Samsung Galaxy phone ? And didn’t your cousin recently purchased that kick ass camera ? So why on earth would you need to pay the services of a professional photographer to shoot you wedding photos ?

There are many reasons why you should think twice before ditching the pro wedding photographer and get your cousin, friend or uncle to do the job instead, and the main one is that you would surely end up very disappointed in getting cheap bland pictures (at best) as your wedding photo album.
And remember, these are the ones you’ll have to look at and cherish for the rest of your life, the ones you’ll be showing to your children !

Kate and I actually happen to know that for a fact first hand.
We got married at a young age and could barely afford a 9 guests wedding back then.
We made the choice to spend most of our budget on our rings because we considered them to be the ever lasting token of our wedding day and I still stand by that decision.
We spent very little on the rest, including the dress, the food and the flowers and I stand by that decision as well.
I have no recollection of what we ate that day (maybe a menu in our wedding box somewhere), my wedding shirt was stolen a few months after my wedding in a laundry mat and Kate never wore her Jackie Onassis dress again.

But what we don’t have are proper photographs or videos to look at and remember our wedding and this is one decision I deeply regret.

We were not photographers back then and had no idea we would one day make a living out of giving people the photographs we never got for our own wedding.
And this feels good because each time we accomplish that mission, we know we’re going to make a couple happy, days and weeks after their weddings but also for the rest of their lives.

Of course photo equipment has tremendously changed especially over the last few years and even mobile phones can give pretty amazing pictures once in a while given the right light conditions.
But at the end of the day it does not replace the thousands of hours experience a professional photographer has over your wedding guests or your photo enthusiast uncle.
Besides, given bad light conditions, which is what you get the most during a wedding :

- indoors low light.
- harsh high outdoor sunlight.
- evening low light.

only state of the art equipment will be able to sort out even the best photographer.
And we are talking about prime lenses and cameras that cost thousands of euros.
The kind of equipment your enthusiast uncle probably doesn’t own (and that’s even before considering backup equipment in case of any unfortunate event etc)…

Producing memories with a camera is actually a job, as is writing a captivating story and if you wouldn’t consider any given person with some writing skills and a good laptop a best selling author, you shouldn’t consider anyone equipped with some kick ass camera an apt wedding photographer.
Let’s not even mention the ridiculous piece of advice of Vogue magazine to give disposable cameras to your guests and let them bring you « fun and candid photographs ».
All you will really end up with are out of focus crap pictures of drunken friends and family members.
