WORRY IS A MISUSE OF YOUR IMAGINATION Don’t worry, be happy ! Do you remember that song ? Sorry, now you’re not going to get it out of head and I have ruined your day.
I am so evil !!!

Well, the message is clear and simple but so true.
Every feeling has a purpose, back to the good old days when humans only grunted and hunt their weekly meals.

I am not a specialist but I seem to recall from university fear triggers production of adrenaline which wakes up your senses all at once, making you a super human for a little while, enabling you to run faster, fight harder etc… This is the only example I will give here but the mechanism is similar for every neurotransmitter our brains produce.
They have a role to play for our survival.

Thus, this being understood, worrying which only seems to make us produce cortisol, works at our detriment, causing illnesses and cancers, not a very helpful survival tool isn’t it ? Worrying is then not only a misuse of our imagination but a deviant malfunctioning acquired characteristic.
Can we de-program ourselves from worrying or at least over worrying ? Even though our modern societies are all about worrying and disguised worrying : insuring, planning, retiring, planning your own funeral (my god, think about the level of unhealthiness of that one for a minute), I believe it is possible.

Although it could be mistaken with carelessness, not worrying is completely different.
Being careless is a lack of wisdom, self respect and basic instinct.
In a completely virgin unspoiled environment, carelessness can get you killed, not worrying can’t.
It’s pretty much the same kind of difference between courage and fearlessness.
Someone who runs in front of a running train to save someone else’s life is courageous, someone who jumps from the top of a building for fun isn’t.
The problem is in our societies that both carelessness and not worrying can get you into trouble, hence the confusion.

Never mind, as many acquired tastes and habits, they can be changed, abandoned, shift, transcended and so can worrying.

It may require of anyone wishing to get rid of this burden, drastic changes and guts but it is well worth it.
Don’t get me wrong, I still worry about trivial things but not so much now and I don’t let it get at me too much.

And I always keep in mind that it’s a trick, a simple misuse of my imagination.
It’s only up to me to imagine something more positive, even if it’s less likely, it doesn’t matter ! At the end of the day in all objectivity, this is not in your hands and you have no clue what is likely or not to ha pen.
